Cataloging

Cataloging is one of three sections of Technical Services. Cataloging staff catalog all materials for the library. The staff includes the Head of Technical Services and 2 full time Copy Catalogers and one-half student assistant.

Cataloging Functions

The main responsibility of Cataloging is to provide access to each book, non-print title, or serial title in the Library's online catalog. Each title is represented by a cataloging record in the online catalog database which provides a description of the work and can be retrieved by using an author, title, or subject search. These catalog records are either created by the cataloging staff, or located from outside sources and transferred into our catalog. Cataloging staff must then link each catalog record to specific barcodes and enter information about the item's location and circulation availability. Other cataloging duties include: physically processing all materials with correct labels and barcodes, correcting barcode problems with older books, maintaining the online catalog to correct errors and improve indexing and displays, and maintaining the lost book file and statistics.

Serials Functions

The main responsibilities of Serials are the acquisition, receiving, and physical maintenance of the library's periodical and standing orders. Each new title is represented by a cataloging record in the online catalog database which provides a description of the work and can be retrieved by using an author, title or subject search. All currently received titles are reflected in the online catalog. Other duties of Serials include: Checking in each issue and maintaining accurate records, claiming missing issues and keeping track of all accounts for serials and standing orders.
